The plans of the Muira Village Health Centre Project are to:

¤  Put up a temporary structure in the interim and offer medical services including educational health care programs free of charge to the people in Muira Parish and the neighboring areas.

¤   Ensure a constant supply of drugs at the health centre through donations and direct purchase abroad and locally.

¤  Construct of a 14-room block to house the Health Centre with full facilities to include a laboratory, an X-Ray unit, administration office, labour and delivery unit, and three wards to provide separate accommodation for the men, women and for the children.

¤  Work with determinant stakeholders to have electricity and piped water at the project site.

¤  Get a truck to assit with logistics and procurements at the construction site and later a van to serve as an ambulance for transporting the sick and infirm.

¤  Acquire a solar system to provide power at the project site. ¤  Work with the local communities to improve their health, sanitation, and living conditions through education and group activities.

¤  Establish working relations with potential support organizations like The Aids Support Organization (TASO), national Referral Hospitals in Uganda, Hospitals in USA, Rotary clubs, and other charitable organizations both in Uganda and the USA.

Goals for 2009
The goals for 2009 will be to complete construction of the permanent building for hosting the Centre as well as increasing the number of clinics held from 12 to 24 per year.

We need to raise at least $ 50,000 through grants and private donations and will therefore continue to solicit for help from aid organizations mostly in form of free or discounted medications and seek specific grants for water and electricity.

Arrangements will be made for future funding through business endeavors such as medical tourism where at least one group of self paying volunteers will be sent to work at the Health centre in 2009.

Supplies and equipment will be acquired and arrangements will be made to acquire a vehicle for the project. While the current economic situation is not very encouraging, we remain optimistic that the dedication of the people involved will make us achieve our goals for 2009.

For the most part, the goals of the project in 2008 were met as follows:

1. Acquisitions On August 10th 2006, Margaret Khan, the founder, received 40 chairs, 3 weighing scales, 30 bedside commodes, and 2 hydraulic hoists from Orthopedic Floor at St. Vincent Hospital 86th Street. The Muira VillageHealth Centre Project recieved a donation of 8 acres of land from the family of Mrs. Gertrude Keene, a resident of Muira village.

2. Community assessment In February 2007 a fact finding mission was conducted by Margaret Khan and Mike Olsen. Community assessment was undertaken through meetings held with the local leaders that culminated into confirmation of the need for a Health centre in Muira village.

3. Approval of the project by the Iganga District Health officials Meetings were held with the district officials to negotiate entry points for the project and to gain their approval and support for the project. Arrangements were made with one Dr. Bitira to work as the physician for the clinic together with a team of four nurses and one Lab technician every last Friday of the month.

4. Construction of temporally shelter for the Health Centre and acquisition of some equipment In June 2007 a temporary structure made up of wooden poles and papyrus mats was erected and partitioned into four compartments to constitute the Reception as well as the Reception, Doctor´s Examination room, Pharmacy and Laboratory. This currently houses the Health Centre offering medical services once a month to the people of Muira parish and its neighborhoods.

5.Health Centre starts offering services The clinic opened doors to its first patients on 22 February 2008. Dr. Bitira together with 4 nurses and a lab technician attended to the over 450 patients who came to the clinic over a three-day period, 22-24 February 2008. Cases handled included Malaria, swellings, complicated fractures, hypertension, inflexible ligaments, skin infections, eye infections, ulsers, and intestinal worms etc.

6. Construction of a permanent building to house theHealth Centre starts Construction of a permanent home for the Muira Village Health Centre started in earnest in December 2008. The The 14-room block will have a laboratory, pharmacy, treatment rooms, Doctor´s examination rooms, Labour and Delivery unit and and three wards to separately carter for the children, women and men.

7. Donation of soccer kits In December 2008, Chase and Athane Knowles from the Ohio, USA visited Muira Village and donated soccer uniforms, balls, and ball pumping equipment to the community. Recipients of the soccer kits were the Muira Primary school, Muira Parish football club and Nambale County football club. Major Challenges Encountered Fundraising was a challenging issue in light of the tough economic climate. Three grants were applied for but did not sail though. Most of the funding therefore came from private donors with several small fund raising events getting varying degrees of success. The turn up of patients on the days of the clinic was overwhelmingly very big and in some cases the medications would not be adequate enough to cater for all the patients.
